Technical Problem: Help Required Desperately

My laptop has been behaving very wierdly for the past two days. Within an hour of switching it on, the laptop becomes sluggish. The task manager reveals that the process "explorer" is using 90 - 100 MB of memory and close to 60-70% CPU. On killing the process, the laptop returns back to its normal state but within an hour, it is back to its sluggish state. Rebooting does not help.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening and what I can do?
